What's in a Name?

What’s in a Name? - Agule Community Health Centre

You may be wondering how we chose the name for this project (or maybe you’re not, but that’s okay because we are going to tell you anyway). The local language spoken in Pallisa is Ateso. It may or may not be customary for visiting mzungus (white people) to be given Ateso names, we’re not really sure. What we do know is that we were all (i.e. the teams of Americans serving in Pallisa) given one. Akia is Danielle’s Ateso name. It means medicine. Ashianut is Anneka’s Ateso name. It means blessing. Combine the two and you get Akia-Ashianut or medicine blessing. We thought it was kind of fitting, since we’re trying to help build a hospital in Pallisa and everything.
