Agule Community Health Centre
The Project
The Agule Community Health Centre (ACHC) is 1-building clinic
located in the
Agule Sub-County of Pallisa District, Eastern Uganda.
There is an 18-page document, drafted by the Board of Directors of
the clinic, describing in detail the vision that they have for
Agule.
This document is available for your perusal; for those of you who
may not feel compelled to read it, the abridged version is available
here.
The Board of Directors of the ACHC are four men who grew up in
the villages around the clinic. The land the clinic sits on belongs
to David, one of the board members. They have paid for virtually
everything from building supplies, to medical supplies, to salaries.
They do this from their own monthly paychecks. Why, you might ask?
Because they are committed to seeing their community pull itself out
of poverty and poor health; because they are so tired of watching
their neighbors die unnecessarily; because they believe that
everyone deserves a fighting chance.
From its inception, the ACHC has been envisioned as a
full-fledged hospital that will provide the standard of care
in the area. They want to offer educational programs, HIV testing
and counseling, ante (pre) natal care and create a movement for
basic hygiene and sanitation on top of providing care for the sick.
The financial resources to see all of this become a reality,
however, are scarce. The ACHC is designed to be a self-sustaining
hospital, but it needs a little help in reaching that goal.
